Within the Bachelor’s program Mechanical Engineering about one third of the curriculum is based on Design-Based Learning (DBL). DBL is a problem-based, learning-inspired method in which students work on a design-problem (of a product, a device, a process) in groups of 6 to 10 students. The running DBL-projects are open-ended projects that require a hands-on approach. The students apply previously acquired or new theoretical information and skills to find a solution to the problem at hand to stimulate deeper learning. Besides, within the Bachelor College system of Eindhoven University of Technology, the department of Mechanical Engineering also organizes and coordinates the successful university-wide DBL-course to 1800+ students entitled Engineering Design.

The department of Mechanical Engineering is looking for a highly motivated lecturer to organize and coordinate the (university-wide) DBL-course Engineering Design and to further develop its current DBL-projects from open-ended to challenge-based.

Candidates will spend 80% of their time on tasks related to the above while 20% is available for research in a field dependent on the interests and background of the candidate. We are looking for team players with a passion for teaching who dare to take on the complete responsibility for the course Engineering Design (organization and coordination) and thereby manage a team of scientific staff and tutors who are linked to the execution of the course, with interest to further innovate the running DBL-projects within the department of Mechanical Engineering.


Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • A PhD degree obtained from a technical university;
  • Demonstrable organizational talent;
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • Experience in education, preferably with project work;
  • A drive to engage in top-level teaching;
  • You have or are willing to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (BKO in Dutch);
  • You have excellent command of English (written/verbal) at minimum C1 level (and for non-Dutch people the ability to speak or the willingness to learn Dutch).


We offer:

  • An appointment for initially 1 year with the possibility to extend to 4 years. The starting date is February 1, 2019;
  • A gross monthly salary of a Lecturer (UFO Lecturer 4 or 3) between €2.709 and €4.978 (based on a fulltime appointment), depending on experience and knowledge;
  • A yearly holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary. A yearly end of year allowance of 8.3% of the yearly salary;
