EAISI - Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute

The Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI, pronounced ‘easy’) is meant to meet the rapidly growing demand for courses, engineers, and expertise in the field of AI.  Our university offers an outstanding position as Scientific Director of EAISI.  Do you have what it takes to make our EASI center a world-recognized institution and are you willing to collaborate with different scientific institutes and industry? Then apply now!

The Eindhoven Artificial Intelligent Systems Institute seeks to facilitate, bring together, stimulate, and amplify AI research at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), with a focus on AI for the real world.  For EAISI this means AI systems in engineering practice, addressing societal challenges with responsible, human centered technology.  EAISI pursues university-industry collaborations and represents TU/e in national and international discussions in order to establish an AI roadmap.

The Institute

EAISI was established in the spring of 2019 as a cross-departmental institute.  It has a staff consisting of a (strategic) management team, a team focusing on (inter)national positioning, and a scientific team.  It builds on the strengths of AI research in the Data Science Center and the High-tech Systems Center and on ongoing collaborations among TU/e researchers.  EAISI is looking to fill the position of Scientific Director who is encouraged to lead EAISI in developing and implementing a long-term scientific roadmap on Engineering AI systems in the application domains of Health, High-Tech Systems, and Mobility, which represent TU/e strengths.

Job Description

Artificial Intelligence already plays a meaningful role at the TU/e.  Every day, some 100 scientists in Eindhoven are busy developing new knowledge and smart applications of this promising technology. They create prize-winning soccer robots, human-friendly drones for the healthcare sector, 3D computer vision systems for autonomous cars, methods for medical image analysis based on deep learning, and smart applications of data from health apps.

Therefore, the university has decided to invest in AI research and education.  EAISI has had an outstanding start and significant impact in the national discussion already.  The task now is to shape the institute further.  In more detail, the following challenges are ahead, characterized by the keywords: multi-disciplinary, collaboration, and impact.

  • Together with the departments, you will develop a multi-faceted (multi-pillar) research agenda and roadmap for research in AI, in combination with stimulating a hiring process accordingly.
  • You will represent the institute nationally, in contacts with governmental organizations and other universities. You will play a pivotal role in contacts with industries.
  • You will develop a vision on long-term developments related to AI in the three key research domains: Data and Algorithms, Humans and Ethics, and Engineering Systems.
  • Build, within the university, an inclusive feeling about EAISI as being ‘our institute’. Make AI inquiry at TU/e visible to the outside world.
  • Obtain clear and fruitful processes within and around EAISI to execute the mission.

EAISI has the aspiration to build intelligent machines that benefit society at large. The new institute will therefore put the moral and ethical aspects of AI at the center of its work. This implies that the machines we make are unbiased, have an understanding for human wants and needs and are transparent and credible about their goals and values.

  • Full Professor with a PhD in Computer Science or, an AI related domain.  You are an established, recognized, and influential expert in AI and its applications.
  • Creative and dedicated to (multi-disciplinary) collaboration.  You understand and appreciate the impact and particular role of AI within engineering disciplines, and the consequences for humans and society.
  • Existing broad network and an interest and capacity to work with industry.
  • Good communication and a track record as a leader in a knowledge-intensive organization, a collaborator, taking initiatives and making and implementing decisions.
  • Open and constructive personality, connecting people and raising enthusiasm.
  • Excellent proficiency in English (written and verbal)

  • A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university with the autonomy to develop your own research line and participate in the curriculum of the department.
  • Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, savings schemes.
  • Family friendly initiatives are in place, such as the Dual Career Opportunity program to support accompanying partners, an international spouse program, and excellent on-campus children day care and sports facilities.
