Postdoc position on nanophotonic virus sensing

Postdoc position on nanophotonic virus sensing

(Postdoctoraal) onderzoeker
Faculteit Technische Natuurkunde

The Molecular Biosensing group at Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands, has an open postdoc position on nanophotonic virus sensing.

Background: nanophotonic sensing

The widely recognized need for more personalized, patient-centered healthcare requires the development of cheap, easy-to-use, yet reliable biomedical devices that are capable of detecting specific diseases. This has become even more apparent in the current COVID-19 pandemic, but will remain of high priority because future pandemics are likely. Nanophotonic structures are increasingly used for biosensing because they transduce the presence of a certain analyte into a large optical signal. This provides avenues toward label-free detection of e.g. viruses and antibodies by sensitively monitoring frequency shifts of resonances in e.g. photonic crystals. In the future, the use of nanophotonic structures will provide opportunities for miniaturization and integration onto photonic chips to enable cheap point-of-care devices.

Project description

The candidate will perform applied research in nanophotonic biosensing. She/he will optically characterize nanophotonic structures (photonic crystals), perform chemical functionalization of the structures, and assess their application in the areas of virus and antibody sensing.

The project will be conducted at the interface of the Molecular Biosensing group (dr. P. Zijlstra) and the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group (Prof. A. Fiore), both at TU/e. The duration of the project is 1 year with the possibility for extension to 3 years.

We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD in the area of photonic biosensing with expertise in chemical functionalization and nanophotonics. Candidates must show interest in experimental physics and demonstrate the drive and capacity to tackle different aspects of a complex problem while working in a team.
