The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop a new, innovative approach in the three-dimensional culture of organoids. Research conducted by the successful candidate will be part of greater and exciting effort aimed at developing a growing in-vitro toolbox for functional tissue engineering, organ regeneration, and disease models at TU/e.

Job description

Post-doc project

A major challenge in the generation and maintenance of three-dimensional large cellular constructs, including engineered tissues, organoids, and organs, is maintaining the supply of oxygen and nutrients to all cells to prevent cell death. In this project, the successful candidate will develop a new experimental approach to address this challenge using on-chip technology. Specifically within this project, the immediate application is the long-term survival, maintenance, and characterization of midbrain organoids, obtained through self-assembly of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which are especially useful as a high-throughput in-vitro model for Parkinson’s disease. You will be responsible for the integration of the chip device (provided by a company partner, BI/OND) and fluidic system in our lab, as well as handling, culture, and characterization of the midbrain organoids (provided by an academic partner, University of Luxembourg) in this fluidic system. The outlook is to set this up as a robust experimental system that can be used as an in vitro platform for long-term organoid culture and faithful disease modelling.

Project setting

The research will be conducted in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in TU/e under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas A. Kurniawan, in close collaboration with BIOND Solutions (BI/OND) and the Developmental and Cellular Biology group in the University of Luxembourg. Dr. Kurniawan’s research strives to make an impact on healthcare through an improved understanding of cell–matrix interactions and (multi)cellular sensing. His group is embedded within the Soft Tissue Engineering and Mechanobiology (STEM) group headed by Prof. Carlijn V.C. Bouten. The STEM group concentrates on the study of disease progression as well as on the engineering of soft tissues, aiming at the replacement of diseased or malformed tissues and the development of in-vitro model systems of developing tissues. The researcher will have access to the Cell and Tissue Engineering laboratory, a state-of-the-art research infrastructure operating at the international forefront of the engineering of living tissues. 

Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in TU/e offers a research driven BME Bachelor program and Masters Biomedical Engineering, Medical Sciences and Technology and Medical Engineering in its Graduate Program. Research areas range from Molecular Bioengineering and Imaging, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering to Biomedical Imaging and Modelling. The department has more than 800 students and up to 200 tenured and non-tenured employees.

The candidate must have a PhD in biomedical engineering, cell biology, or equivalent, and an extensive and demonstrable experience with cell and organoid/tissue culture. The candidate should be able to effectively communicate scientific ideas, foster collaborations, and have a capability for independent thinking. Moreover, the candidate should be able to work independently within a dynamic team and be proficient in written and spoken English.
