Photonic chips, or PICs, will revolutionize the application of photonics in areas such as artificial intelligence, healthcare, communication, quantum and sensing. Integrated photonics has the potential to be a disruptive response to solving big societal challenges of today and tomorrow. The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), together with University of Twente, TNO and Photon Delta has founded the Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC), a center of excellence that underpins the ambition to strengthen the emerging integrated photonics technologies and ecosystem around those.
Dense photonic integration technologies at the photonic integration (PhI) group at TU/e enable implementation and comprehensive sensing systems in a small and lightweight form factor. Highly parallel, multichannel circuitry comprising optical sources, coherent detectors, polarization diversity, and optical beam forming can be realized in the form of a few square millimeter photonic integrated circuits (PIC). Such PICs can be intimately integrated with electronics and be implemented in the form of a contactless, optical probe for a sub-micron profilometry that can be incorporated into metrology systems for the manufacturing of semiconductors. Investigation and implementation of the integrated coherent profilometry for a large area high-resolution and high-thruput imaging and topography mapping tools for in-line fabrication process monitoring. High throughput methods for large-area, high-resolution three-dimensional mapping. Including feature recognition, the device under test and probe handling, and positioning strategies e.g. step, scan, or scan and step. Measurement data acquisition and processing for real-time monitoring. Pathways for integration into wafer level test, and in-line inspection tools.
Academic and Industrial Environment
The PITC works tightly together with universities as well as industry and bridges the gap by performing applied research and development activities. Our work is characterized by the combination of academic excellence and industry relevance, providing a strong real-world impact.
The Metrology Program
Metrology is one of the PITC’s main technical program lines with an objective to overcome one of the major challenges related to manufacturing of integrated photonics products. Key to manufacturing PICs in high volume is the development of scalable, reliable, and highthroughput test processes and systems. As a part of this program TU/e-PhI is involved in an exploratory track to feature the next generation photonic integration technologies in the metrology systems for the semiconductor production tools.
