Postdoc in the area of: Design and evaluation of technology in Dementia

We are looking for a full-time postdoc in the field of Design and Human-Computer Interaction with a strong affinity with design research in context of health or other sensitive settings.

The position is available in the Systemic Change group, Industrial Design Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands.

It is a 2.5-year position intended to start May  1st 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

As a post-doc you will work within a team of researchers / designers / graduate students on a project related to design for dementia, Living Labs, co-design and work in collaboration with small-medium enterprises, care professionals and people living with dementia. Skills you will employ are related to empathy, user research, design, user experience design and field-evaluation of interactive systems in context of dementia. On top of that you will require adequate communication and organization skills.

The post-doc work will be closely linked to the Interreg program project Certification-D. while support in other projects might also be required.

The aim of this position is to conduct research and fulfill project management activity in the context of the certification-D project. In this project we will set up a community based Living Lab, in collaboration with care organization Oktober and Vilans, and evaluate technology from SMEs that are interested to contribute to the lives of people living with dementia and their wider care network. In this Living Lab we want to work together with people living with dementia to ideate, design, evaluate and implement innovative design concepts. In addition, we will also work closely together with the companies and provide them with advice from a design and research perspective to improve their product offering.

Another aim is to write academic research papers related to the work conducted in this area and to support students and PhD candidates with their research as well.

Finally 20% (0,2 FTE) of your position will be dedicated to education, you will support full academic staff in teaching and the coaching of students in areas that are relevant to your field of expertise or the projects that you work in.

Candidates are expected to have advanced skills in ‘design and/or HCI in context of Health’, interaction design and/or design research, and we expect a relevant publication record and convincing portfolio of work.

The Postdoc will work on:

  • Being the lead researcher and coordinator from the TU/e in the certification-D project
  • You will work on conceptualizing, designing and prototyping services or technologies together with SMEs in context of the Living Lab
  • Conducting (qualitative) field-research in the domain of informal/ formal learning and/or healthy lifestyles
  • Supervising relevant student projects
  • Publishing in high-standard international journals and conferences in the field of HCI
  • Building and maintaining relevant professional networks
  • Setting up project proposals and applying for funding for future research

We are looking for candidates who have

  • Completed (or are about to complete) a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Dementia related studies, Design & health, or a closely related topic
  • Experience with working with people from different disciplines.
  • Experience in bridging between theory and design.
  • Experience with interaction design research and/or designing interactive systems
  • Experience or affinity with designing, planning and conducting (qualitative) research and field-evaluations of interactive systems
  • Experience working with diverse target groups, preferably in the context of healthcare
  • Publication experience in high-quality HCI conferences/journals
  • Experience with working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Good communication skills: fluency in English in mandatory, speaking Dutch is preferable as you will be working within a healthcare context.
  • (Preferably) experience in applying for funding
  • (Preferably) experience in supervising students


We are offering:

  • A full-time temporary appointment for a period of 2 years
  • A gross monthly salary between € 2.972 and € 4.274 (on a full-time basis), depending on experience and knowledge;
  • A yearly holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary;
  • A yearly end-of-year allowance of 8.3% of the yearly salary;
