PostDoc Characterization and modelling of mechanical properties of composites

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has the following vacancy: Postdoc Characterization and modelling of mechanical properties of composites under extreme environmental conditions (V35.3840) in the group Mechanics of Materials of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
(Postdoctoraal) onderzoeker
Faculteit Werktuigbouwkunde

We are looking for a full-time Postdoc in the area of the characterization and modelling of the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced composite materials at the department of Mechanical Engineering. The position is within in the Mechanics of Materials group, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands. It is a 2-year position intended to start from June 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

The objective of this research is to develop a new predictive modelling framework that allows the simulation of the mechanical performance of thermoplastic composites, in short-term as well as in long-term loading (creep, fatigue), taking into account the influence of harsh environmental conditions (salt water, low temperature, high pressure).

Modelling will be based on a micromechanical approach that builds on numerical tools previously developed in our groups. You will perform characterization and validation experiments on unfilled resin and unidirectional composites. Initially, only quasi static behavior will be studied. Later in the project, the experiments are extended to fatigue tests and experiments on samples that have been exposed to relevant environmental conditions. Final goal is the development of a multi-physics micro-mechanical model that captures the observed response and can be used in a design process.

Talented, enthusiastic candidates with excellent analytical and communication skills holding a PhD in Engineering Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials or Polymer Science at a Mechanical Engineering of Aerospace Engineering department. A strong interest in mechanics of materials is required. Experience in multi-scale modelling, micromechanics, and experimental mechanics are of benefit.

We offer:

  • A full-time appointment for a period of 2 years
  • A gross monthly salary between € 2.709 and € 4.274 (on a full-time basis), depending on experience and knowledge;
  • A yearly holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary;
  • A yearly end-of-year allowance of 8.3% of the yearly salary;
  • A broad package of fringe benefits (including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities).

Informatie en sollicitatie

The research activities of the Mechanics of Materials and Polymer Technology research groups concentrate on the fundamental understanding of various macroscopic problems in relation to the microstructure of the material and the processing and use of polymer components. The group have a unique research infrastructure, both from an experimental and computational perspective. The Mechanical Testing Lab offers a large capacity of testing equipment for short-term (impact) and long-term testing (static and cyclic fatigue). The Multiscale Lab facilitates research on evolution of the microstructure of the material by means of a variety of microscopes (SEM and CT) that allow for in-situ testing.
