Functieomschrijving

The Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for:

1 PhD student on innovative combined drive and energy harvesting systems in hybrid dampers for automotive application (3Ccar / Autodrive projects).

The research will be conducted within the Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, Department of Electrical Engineering, in close cooperation with industrial partners. The local team consists of 2 other PhD candidates and one PostDoc researcher, supervised by senior staff.

Research challenge

In this project a drive and harvesting system concept consisting of a linear motor and hydraulic damper is studied. The combined system will act as a smart hybrid damper, to be applied in one corner of a car. Both systems are driven by power electronic converters. As the ultimate target is to make the system selfsupporting, energy harvesting by means of the linear motor (then acting as a generator) is used to provide power for all systems involved. A local cell based on supercap technology is used for temporary storage of the harvested energy. Therefore an important sub-task is to control the state-of-charge (SoC) of this storage element.

The PhD candidate will first design and test the power electronics to drive the various loads. Good efficiency of these subsystems is essential to obtain sustained operation with a limited amount of power. In a second phase the local control tasks, providing defined force profiles as demanded by an external set point, need to be investigated, optimized and implemented. An important aspect is to define the distribution of the total force demanded over the two contributing parts, in such a way that physical limits are adhered to and the energy balance necessary to maintain the SoC of the storage system is satisfied.

Electromechanics and Power Electronics group

The EPE-group research activities span all facets of electromechanics and power electronics, in particular linear and rotary electrical machines, multi-level power converters, and design tools.  The EPE group has a strong interconnection with industry via direct, national and European funded projects in a variety of application areas like high-tech systems (semicon, robotics, medical) and sustainable energy (mobility, transport, smart grids). EPE owns a modern (opened in 2015) research laboratory (680m2) with additional workshop facilities and an electrical drive educational laboratory. The PhD student will join the group and collaborate intensely with the other members of the EPE group (around 50 researchers), where he/she will participate in a mixed academic / industrial research activity. Research within the EPE Group is characterized by personal supervision.

The aim of this research project is to investigate new concepts for hybrid dampers for cars, thereby facilitating improved body dynamics and ultimately autonomous driving.

Functie-eisen

For the PhD positions in this project, candidates with and MSc degree in Electrical/Aerospace/Control Engineering and Physics will be selected and hired as doctoral students in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics Group (https://www.tue.nl/epe)for a 4-years period. Both candidates should have:
