PhD student to create a generalized model for iron loss calculations

Faculteit Electrical Engineering

The Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for:

PhD student to create a generalized model for iron loss calculations in simplified structures that represent electrical machine stators

The research will be conducted within the Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, Department of Electrical Engineering, in close cooperation with Ghent University and Industrial partners in Belgium and in the Netherlands.

Research challenge

Due to rising energy costs, high efficiency motors have been increasingly in demand in the last decade. Furthermore, for reasons of compactness and (thus) weight, high speed machines are preferred. Unfortunately, designing a (high speed) machine for high efficiency does not automatically result in a low cost machine. For example, choosing very thin laminations for the stator stack results, on the one hand, in lower electromagnetic losses and higher efficiency, however, on the other hand, increases the machine cost. This inherent trade-off will be thé limiting factor in tomorrow’s electric drives. The scientific and technological breakthroughs will be used in the Dutch and Belgian industry involved in estimating the detailed efficiency of electric drives including the influence of stacking techniques, internal stresses, glued versus non-glued stack, influence of radial and axial pressure, lamination shape, deterioration effects due to cutting and assembling.

Electromechanics and Power Electronics group

TThe EPE-group research activities span all facets of electromechanics and power electronics, in particular linear and rotary electrical machines, multi-level power converters, and design tools. The EPE group has a strong interconnection with industry via direct, national and European funded projects in a variety of application areas like high-tech systems (semicon, robotics, medical) and sustainable energy (mobility, transport, smart grids). EPE owns a modern (opened in 2015) research laboratory (680m2) with additional workshop facilities and an electrical drive educational laboratory. The PhD student will join the group and collaborate intensely with the other members of the EPE group (around 50 researchers), where he/she will participate in a mixed academic / industrial research activity. Research within the EPE Group is characterized by personal supervision.

The aim of his/her PhD research project is to research accurate loss calculation methods that are characterized by high dynamic performance, high power density and high efficiency, where research within the EPE Group is characterized by personal supervision.
