Functieomschrijving

Bolted ring flanges form the common connection between the foundation and the tower in offshore wind farms. Despite its widespread use, there are still fundamental challenges such as the prevention of premature bolt failure. With the increasing size of wind turbines and hence ring flanges, they become so large that there is a lack of evidence of their structural performance. In addition, installation, maintenance and decommissioning become more complex. The structural performance of a bolted ring flange relies on the quality of all the elements of the connection, which is crucial for fatigue performance. Measurement data gathered during installation can partially identify error sources and thereby assist in the estimation of structural reliability. At first, the goal is to develop a fatigue prediction model by studying the structural behavior of a single bolt and bolted ring flange connections using finite element models and combining this with installation measurements and in-service inspection possibilities. The final goal is to evaluate the system reliability of large bolted ring flanges, thereby making use of the developed prediction model and embedding it in a probabilistic framework. You will validate your models with tests carried out by our partners. Comparing the evaluated reliability with its requirement, you will set the standard for installation and production tolerances of large bolted ring flanges.

Functie-eisen

You are experienced in the following three fields: 1) structural reliability (probabilistic) analysis; 2) finite element modelling; and 3) fatigue. You are able to analyse the mechanical behavior of a complex system. You like cooperating with others and at the same time, you take responsibility for your own work. For this position, you require:

  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A research-oriented attitude.
  • Proof that you fluently speak and write English (C1 level).
  • Good command of finite element software (Ansys, Abaqus, or equivalent)
  • Good command of programming, either in Matlab, Python, C++, Fortran or equivalent.

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. € 2.541,- max. € 3.247,-).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
