Functieomschrijving

Background

For decades researchers have tended to reveal the fundamental principles behind dynamic plasma charging of small particles immersed in it. Although plasma-particle interaction is relatively well understood, the stochastic nature of plasma-charging of nanoparticles is close to a black box in terms of which principle processes play a dominant role.

Project description

The main goal of the open projects is to understand the fundamental processes regarding the dynamic plasma charging of particles a few nanometers in size. The work will be mainly experimentally oriented using a combination of state-of-the-art plasma diagnostics that will be further developed in the framework of the defined project. A new experimental setup will be developed and built. Also, the project includes the development of analytical models to enhance understanding of the conducted measurement campaigns. The project will be supervised by Dr. J. Beckers (co-promotor) and Prof. Gerrit Kroesen (promotor).

Functie-eisen

We welcome applications from candidates with a Master degree and a background and interest in (complex or dusty) plasma physics. Candidates must prove a strong attitude towards experimental physics and the drive and capacity to tackle different aspects of a complex problem with large independence while collaborating intensively with colleagues.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

We offer a challenging research project in an ambitious research group through a fixed-term appointment for a period of 4 years. The research is intended to lead to the attainment of a PhD degree. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions. The salary starts at € 2266,- per month (gross) in the first year, increasing up to € 2897,- per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover, an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year allowance is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation is available. The university offers an attractive package of fringe benefits such as excellent technical infrastructure, child care, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities. TU/e also provides opportunities for personal development by offering every PhD student a series of courses in the PROOF program as an addition to your scientific education.
