PhD on Building an Open Source Community for Room Acoustics

PhD on Building an Open Source Community for Room Acoustics

Interested in supporting Open-Source communities and bringing scientific research to society? Unique opportunity: co-create an Open-Source Software community! Join the research group on Social Software Engineering!
Mathematics and Computer Science

This PhD position is part of a larger project “A new era of room acoustics simulation software: from academic advances to a sustainable opensource project and community”. One of the main problems with the state of art in room acoustics modelling is the gap between developments at academia and the methods that engineers use. Together with the colleagues from the Acoustics group of the Built Environment faculty and several companies, in this project we will (1) further develop and validate room acoustics modelling methods, (2) develop a software prototype of these methods and (3) create a sustainable open-source (OS) community capable of continuing development and usage of the prototype beyond the timeframe of this project.

You will contribute to activities (2) and (3) of the project. Your first group of tasks will be related to the open-source code and documentation: you will design the evolution-resilient software architecture, perform ongoing evaluation of maintainability of the software being developed, and ensure that the documentation does not form obstacles preventing participation in the project of diverse individuals. The second group of tasks will be related to community building. You will design and evaluate ways of recruiting and retaining open-source contributors. Closer to the end of the project you will design of the transition strategy by transferring the ownership of the project to an open-source foundation.

  • MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related fields
  • Interest in community building and community management.
  • Working and teaching are in English. Excellent skills in this language are required.

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.

For many PhD students the TU/e Campus is not only a place of study and work, but also a home. Since the opening of the Aurora and Luna apartment blocks, hundreds of students and staff of different nationalities are resident here, turning our green campus in the heart of Eindhoven a lively place. A movie theater with a grand café/restaurant, a sports center and a supermarket all contribute to a pleasant place to live and stay. We also have child-care facilities on campus. Because even when you are far from home, we feel it is important for you to feel at home.
