PhD: Innovative RF coils for ultra-high field MRI -design, building, testing

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is non-invasive and non-radiating imaging modality which is efficiently used for diagnostic purposes, pre and post-operative follow up of the patients and for guided interventions. Increased sensitivity allows increased signal-to-noise-rate (SNR) for higher resolution and shorter scan time. Higher magnetic susceptibilities at UHF are a clear advantage in a number of MRI techniques (fMRI, SWI and QSM). On the other hand, the wavelength in a tissue at UHF is shorter, which causes interference effects leading to B1+ field inhomogeneities. In addition, B0 field inhomogeneities are higher at UHF. To maximize the potential of MR imaging at UHF regime, B1+ and B0 field inhomogeneities should be minimized.

In the project, the successful candidate will investigate how to resolve and control these radiofrequency (RF) and B0 field interactions with a human body in order to unleash the full potential of the UHF-MRI. The novel RF (B1+) and DC (B0) coil design included in a transcieve coil array configuration will be used for greatly improved structural, functional and metabolic imaging at 7 tesla MRI.  The novel RF coils will be constructed for maximum penetration into tissue, while tightly fit arrays with flexible coils will be considered for improving sensitivity. This cutting edge research will be conducted within an interdisciplinary team of researchers both at TU/e as well as in exciting national and international collaborations, i.e. with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR).

Project setting

The research will be conducted in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) under supervision of Dr. ir. Irena Zivkovic ( Her team is embedded within the Electromagnetics for Care & Cure laboratory ( chaired by Dr. Maarten Paulides. This lab is incorporated in the Center for Care & Cure Technology Eindhoven ( that aims to expand synergistic partnerships between the department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, medical centers and industry. These partnerships are crucial for not only creating healthcare technologies, but also to form a fast track towards reducing costs while improving quality of care. We aim to conduct groundbreaking work, pushing boundaries and leading the way in research, education and healthcare.


We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented candidate to join our growing and ambitious research team.

  • The candidate should have a Master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in electrical or biomedical engineering, physics or a related field.
  • The candidate should show affinities to and experience with practical work.
  • General knowledge about electromagnetics, antennas, MRI, (multi-physics) modeling and simulations.
  • Demonstrable experience with simulation softwares (CST, Matlab, HFSS) is a plus.
  • Have a creative and critical thinking attitude, an intrinsic motivation and an ability to cooperate with a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds.
  • Excellent English language skills (writing and presenting).

  • A gross monthly salary between € 2.395 and € 3.061 (on a fulltime basis), depending on experience and knowledge. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities.

  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
