We seek a PhD candidate for the research project “Integration of additive manufacturing in spare parts supply chains”. This exciting project is part of the “Robust and Light Additive Manufacturing component for Military systems (ROLIAC)” program, which is funded by the European Union. The candidate will work together with colleagues from other ROLIAC research partners.
The goal of the research project is to investigate the added value of additive manufacturing in the military supply chain, set up to deliver spare parts in an area of operation. The insights will have broader applicability to other supply chains, e.g., those in the energy sector. The candidate will compare the costs and performance of a supply chain that does not use additive manufacturing for printing spare parts with one that uses it optimally. More specifically, for the latter one the candidate will first use techniques from operations research and game theory to
(i) investigate the optimal location of additive manufacturing technology in the spare parts supply chain for one country active in an area of operation and (ii) determine the optimal location of additive manufacturing technology in the spare parts supply chain for a number of countries that operates jointly in an area of operation. Thereafter, the candidate will compare the optimal supply chain with additive manufacturing with one that does not use additive manufacturing in order to show the value of additive manufacturing and the improved robustness of the military supply chains.
This gives insights to military and other organizations on how and when to use additive manufacturing in practice. We thus aim to contribute to both the practice of and literature on supply chain management. We aim to perform rigorous research with high practical relevance that can be published in top journals in the field of management science & operations research.
