Section description
In the section Multi-phase and Reactive Flows of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, research is focused on clean and efficient combustion, including thermo-acoustic noise production of combustion systems.

The goal of the project titled ‘STABLE-System based thermo-acoustic design of central heating equipment’ is to develop an original theoretical, numerical and experimental analysis framework based on a system level description of the thermo-acoustic behavior of heating systems. This project, sponsored by NWO-TTW, is a joint project of the groups Multi-phase and Reactive Flows and Dynamics and Control with 2 PhD positions (one at each of the groups). The 2 PhD students will work in close cooperation.

Aim of the PhD project, Tasks
The PhD project at the section Multi-phase and reactive flows of the Department of Mechanical Engineering focuses on experimental and modeling studies describing the influence of combustion and burner parameters on network theory and thermo-acoustic system modeling, including intrinsic acoustic instabilities of combustion.

Functie-eisen

Qualification of applicant
Within this project, we are looking for a candidate with a MSc-degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Electrical or Control Engineering with an interest to work in an interdisciplinary project such as ‘System based thermo-acoustic design’. He/she should have interest in (thermo)acoustics and combustion. The candidate should have excellent communication skills in English and an attitude to collaborate in a cooperative project such as the ‘Active Control of Thermo-acoustic instabilities’ project.
