Position within the unit Urban Science and Systems, Department of the Built Environment

The unit Urban Science and Real Estate contains 3 chairs: Real Estate Management & Development, Urban Planning and Information Systems. The present position of ICT developer will be situated in the Information Systems chair.

Research support activities

The Unit is in charge of the Design and Decision Support Systems in architecture and urban planning (DDSS) research program and the ICT developer will support research activities in this program. 

The ICT developer will support Master students, PhD students, postdocs, and tenured scientific staff members in their research activities. Firstly, he/she will support them in the system design and implementation as part of their research project. He/she will give directions to the use software tools, and software programming to enable them to become self-supporting in their research project. Secondly, he/she will take over part of the system implementation when thorough ICT programming knowledge and skills are necessary that go beyond the scope of the researcher. Implementation always takes place in close collaboration with the researchers. Thirdly, he/she will develop new systems or tools that serve a long term target or a larger group of researchers in the unit. This development takes place under supervision of the unit chairs.

Teaching support activities

The ICT developer is responsible for the contribution to various courses offered by the USRE unit in the BSc and MSc programs in the Department of the Built Environment. He/she will support in teaching bachelor and master students, PhD candidates and postdocs.

System Management

The ICT developer is responsible for the hardware and software in the Design System Laboratory. He/she is also responsible for the maintenance of the USRE unit servers and the software running on these servers. System management is executed in close cooperation with the ICT services department of the TU/e.

Future expectations

The ICT developer is expected to contribute to the academic performance of a high-ranked group of scientists. He/she should be motivated to be involved in cutting-edge research with enthusiastic students. 


 The ICT developer has to meet the following requirements:

  • a Bachelor in ICT;
  • affinity for experimental research and development;
  • information system design and programming skills;
  • the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams;
  • creativity and strong communication skills;
  • the ability to support, Master students, PhD students and postdocs
  • system management skills


We offer a temporary position for two years with possibility of a tenured (permanent) position after those two years under the condition of a positive assessment. Therefore we offer a career and possibilities for a personal development program. Based on performance indicators set out by the department of Built Environment, a decision will be made at the end of the first 1.5 years whether to offer a permanent position, after a positive assessment in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

Gross monthly salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is based on knowledge and experience and is at least € 2.588 (salary scale 10, salary number 0) up to a max. of € 4.084 gross per month (salary scale 10, salary number 12) at a fulltime appointment (growth to salary scale 11 (up to max. of € 4.757) may be possible in the future); plus 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year allowance.
