The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at TU Eindhoven (TU/e) is looking for a full-time full professor (1.0 fte) in statistics with a focus on network analysis. The full professor will be heading the Statistics group, which is currently led by Prof. dr. Edwin van den Heuvel. The Statistics group, the Probability group (prof. dr. Remco van der Hofstad), and the Stochastic Operations Research group (Prof. dr. ir. Sem Borst) currently form the section Stochastics within the department.

The department is organized in seven sections and the capacity group Mathematics consists of the sections Discrete Mathematics and CASA (Center for Analysis, Scientific Computing and Applications), next to the Stochastics section.

Within the department we operate from the vision that we can develop innovative solutions to societal challenges through a deeper understanding of fundamentals of computer science and mathematics. We are characterized by combining a fundamental and curiosity driven approach to research, while embedding its activities in challenging application areas. The department has a tradition of recognized high quality education.

The Environment

The Stochastics (STO) section consists of the chairs of Probability, Statistics, and Stochastic Operations Research. The research of the section has a very strong reputation; in the Research Evaluation Mathematics 2009-2014 Mathematics at TU/e received the maximum score on all counts; this also occurred in the Research Evaluation of Mathematics 2003-2008, then for the combined groups of the STO section and CO (Combinatorial Optimization). The section is heavily involved in the NWO Gravitation Program Networks that started in 2014. The research in the section is both fundamental and applied. The section participates in the research school BETA and is heavily intertwined with Eurandom, the European institute for research in Statistics, Probability and Stochastic Operations Research. Eurandom is a workshop and visitor center that exists since 1998 and is part of the section. These activities are to a considerable extent organized within the framework of the Dutch Stochastics cluster STAR, in which Eindhoven plays a very prominent role. 

Stochastics is considered to be an important area of research and education within the 4TU Applied Mathematics Institute (4TU.AMI); the Section is strengthening its ties with groups in probability and stochastic operations research in Delft and Twente. In the Statistics group, the research is focused on statistical methods for the analysis and collection of (complex and high-dimensional) data, including methods in the domain of statistical learning, causal inference, reliability and monitoring, and linear, non-linear, and generalized linear mixed models. In the Probability group, the research focus is on stochastic processes, spin systems and random graphs, as well as their relations to complex networks and processes living on them, with applications to citation networks, health-care systems, social networks and epidemics. In the Stochastic Operations Research group, the focus is on the analysis of random walks, queueing theory and its application to the performance analysis and optimization of computer, communication, production and logistic systems.

The Statistics group consists of six faculty staff, three researchers, eleven PhD students, and three lecturers. The research areas cover a large range of topics: parameter estimation, hypothesis testing (equivalence, non-inferiority), model fitting, latent variable models, mixed models, missing data, process control, survival & reliability theory, causality, outlier detection, and statistical learning methods. The Statistics group does theoretical and applied research. Theoretical work is often conducted out of curiosity, but always with some kind of application in mind. Applied work focuses on developing, improving, and comparing statistical methods for real applications. The group actively explores new research lines in Data Science and maintains many strong ties with industry, including biopharmaceutical companies, chemical industry, high-tech companies and medical centers and international research groups.

Considering the research focus of the Statistics group and the heavy involvement of the other groups in (fundamental) network research, there is a need for a professor in statistics for networks to complement current research areas. The focus of the research line on networks is the development of statistical theory and foundations of networks to be able to analyze large and high-dimensional data: e.g. sampling, estimation procedures, goodness-of-fit statistics, outlier detection, quantification of uncertainty. We are interested in both the statistical analysis of network data, where the observations are directly observed as the edges of the network (like data from social networks or citation networks), as well as the statistical analysis of sparse cross-sectional and longitudinal data that can be represented by a network (e.g. biological networks), where observations are collected at units but where the number of features are larger than the number of units. Specific topics of interest that would fit nicely with the Statistics group are network sampling designs, Bayesian network analysis, monitoring dynamic networks, latent network models, stochastic block models, model-based clustering of networks, etc.


Tasks and requirements

We expect the candidate to contribute to the research program of the Stochastics section, on all (strategic, tactical, operational) levels, especially in the interplay between the Stochastic Operations Research and Probability group. The candidate will play an active role in Eurandom. Additionally, you will work closely with other groups who focus on data science (e.g. data mining, process mining, data bases) and will establish and strengthen contacts with other departments of TU/e. The candidate will also be involved (preferably in a leading role) in the new AI institute (EAISI) of the TU/e. Proven involvements in interdisciplinary research projects are encouraged. And also attracting external research funding with external organizations is requested. Furthermore, the candidate will teach several courses per year in different education programs, but especially in the data science programs, and the candidate is also encouraged to perform managerial tasks. Therefore the candidate need extensive teaching experience inside or outside a university on an academic level, with proven didactic qualifications and an inspiring personality as a teacher.

More specifically, the tasks include:

Stimulate fundamental and applied research of the group, to initiate new research directions regarding statistics and networks, and to establish links with other research programs at TU/e and at Eurandom;

  • Teach courses in statistics and data science;
  • Supervise MSc and PhD students;

Initiate, acquire and coordinate research projects, in particular in the context of external funding.

The candidate should have a deep and broad insight in the required research domain and should be actively involved in the research area.

Job Requirements:

  • A PhD in mathematics or statistics;
  • Ability to conduct academic research of high quality on relevant problems, proven for example by a relevant PhD thesis and/or publication;
  • Ability to teach, shown for instance by experience or assistance in teaching and positive evaluations of these teaching efforts;
  • Creative and dedicated to (multidisciplinary) collaboration;
  • Good communication and leadership skills;
  • Excellent proficiency (written and oral) in English.
