Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) offers a research driven BME Bachelor program and Masters in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Engineering in its Graduate Program. Its research areas range from Molecular Bioengineering and Imaging, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering to Biomedical Imaging and Modelling. The department has more than 800 students and up to 200 tenured and non-tenured employees.

About the BME laboratories

The department facilitates research by means of independent shared laboratories for the domains of Tissue Engineering, Chemical Biology, Sensing, Imaging and Biomechanics, and cross-overs of these. At the department all laboratories are shared by researchers throughout the department, facilitating cross-breeding of ideas and resulting in state-of-the-art laboratories filled with advanced equipment.  In all laboratories research as well as education take place alongside, following the master-apprentice approach of education within the TU/e. Next to intradepartmental cross-overs, the research in our laboratories extend beyond the borders of our department and even the university in to long-term collaborations and consortia, and in (inter)nationally funded research programs.

Job description

The laboratory for Cell & Tissue Engineering comprises a facility laboratory at BSL-2 (biosafety level 2) for several research groups and students of the whole department. Research in this laboratory is aimed at gaining insight in the effects of mechanical manipulation of tissue and the possibilities to effectively engineer tissues with a (near-)natural functionality, such that in later stages of research these can be used for implantation purposes. Furthermore, the laboratory accommodates teaching of bachelor and master students to conduct their projects in the laboratory during the final stage of their study.

About Soft Tissue Engineering and Mechanobiology

Within the group Soft Tissue Engineering and Mechanobiology, supervised by Prof.dr. Bouten, several large projects are performed in creating developing intelligent biomaterials that activate and guide the self-repair capacity of the body with the main goal to fight chronic illnesses (heart failure, kidney failure and worn intervertebral discs).

About the position

We are now extending our facilities and to accommodate the research and education needs, we seek a colleague who can support our technical team consisting of 7 people as all-round technician. This person who will join our technical team supports not only by primarily doing hands-on for the research, but also functions as a troubleshooter including advising and giving instructions for (international) researchers and students working in the laboratory. Because our laboratory accommodates research of all the groups at the BME department, the candidate is expected to possess good communication skills and experience which enable him/her to work at different levels of knowledge effectively.

 Your tasks as All-round technician are:

  • Supporting the work of the researchers at the BME department by giving technical advice and helping them in setting up their experimentation in the laboratory
  • Executing research projects together with PhD students and Postdocs
  • Support the education needs of the bachelor and master students during their final projects in the laboratory by giving trainings/instructions on certain laboratory techniques they need to conduct their final project in the laboratory
  • Contributing to high-level research by giving presentation/demonstration on the state-of-the-art of laboratory techniques to colleagues and/or users of the laboratory
  • Optimize laboratory protocols and develop new protocols for particular techniques when needed
  • Conducting general laboratory maintenance tasks.


  • An enthusiastic HLO/MSc with minimal 3 years work experience in Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and/or Molecular Biology
  • Hands-on mentality and performance
  • Experience with standard cell/molecular biological techniques such as basic cell culture, biochemical assays, PCR, flow cytometry, and lentiviral work
  • Experience with biomedical research using 3D culture and/or polymer science is pre
  • Experience with developing and writing protocols for laboratory techniques
  • Someone with a flexible attitude, independent, and accurate
  • Good in time management
  • Good English communication and presentation skills


We offer you:

A challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious university (0,8 – 1,0 FTE) for a period of one year with a possibility for extension at proven competence. Depending on relevant experience the gross salary will be minimum € 2.204,= and maximum € 2.975,= per month (scale 7 CAO-NU) in line with the Collective Agreement for Dutch Universities. An attractive package of fringe benefits, including excellent work facilities, partially paid parental leave, commuting expenses, pension scheme, extra holiday allowance 8% in May, end-of-year bonus of 8.3% in December and excellent sports facilities. Depending on resume and work experience a contract via Euflex (the TU/e secondment organization) can be considered.
