The goal of the Data Intelligence Lab (DI-Lab) is to support our university's academics, with means and expertise required for them to design and materialize their research by using modern data platforms and tooling. As research matures, the accompanying complexity of the technology stack supporting the work also increases. The DI-Lab aims to offer the right technical abstraction for various research profiles by leveraging industry-hardened, but also experimental, solutions. 

The DI-Lab covers a broad landscape where it is futile to ‘do it all’. Therefore, we are looking for people who can smartly navigate the domain and are capable to discuss the reasoning behind several approaches with our researchers to support them in their decision-making. Depending on your perspective, the DevOps process flow can be recognized in the research process. Hence, we are initially focusing on the adoption of fundamental tooling (e.g., Gitlab/Github, Atlassian Jira/Confluence, OpenShift) and embedding those in the research workflows. In time, we aim to complement our services with more development activities. Our university is not unique in these challenges, but we do recognize the necessity and urgency for this type of support and are willing to take a pioneering role whilst collaborating with SURF and other universities for long-term embedding.  

Some examples of activities we do are consulting individual research projects through (solution) architecture and mature emerging domains such as IOT and Living Labs on campus to facilitate a community and enable researchers to take their research to a new level.  

What does the job entail? 

  • You will become an essential part of our DI-Lab team to develop and further operationalize new tooling and services for our university; 
  • You will be joining the lab in an early stage, and so can help identify and develop TU/e data culture.  
  • As DevOps Engineer, you will actively work together with colleagues from the cloud and platform teams technically, but also with our business representatives functionally; considering the complete value delivery chain in our work; 
  • You will also work on laterally interfacing our systems with others’ such as (a.o.): high-performance computing (HPC) and research data management (RDM). 


What will you be doing? 

  • Decide on what are our next opportunities are that we want to tackle together with our researchers. Being a Business Partner to our researchers, to decide in collaboration with them what our next opportunities are.  
  • Develop, maintain and improve applications, systems and services specific to the DI Lab; 
  • Leveraging Azure and Openshift to offer new services for our researchers. 
  • Support our researchers with CI/CD in our Gitlab environment or Github. 
  • Support our Research IT department with integrating our solutions, within the daily way of-working of our researchers; 
  • Technically guide development processes, from pilot to production status; 
  • Connect systems to a broader system context (HPC, RDM, etc.). 


  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies. 
  • Effective communication skills and a proactive and flexible mindset to solve issues our researchers face while designing and developing their research environments; 
  • Bachelors’ or Master’s in the ICT domain, or a related field. 
  • Experience in developing in (and maintaining) Unix/Linux environments. 
  • Fluency in programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, Go, etc. is considered a plus. 
  • Experience with version control using git (i.e. Github/Gitlab); experience with CI/CD is considered a plus. 
  • Fluency in English, both in speaking and writing.

  • A competitive salary scheme (salary scale 11 with max € 5.439,- gross p/m) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities The salary level depends on your experience, education and knowledge. On top of this you also receive extra annual holiday allowance (8% in May), an end-of-year allowance (8.3% in December, a so-called 13th check.) 
  • An attractive package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure,   excellent sports facilities, savings schemes, and 41 days of holiday based on 40 hours a week. Foreign experts may benefit from the 30% tax ruling facility in order to get a higher net salary, the TU/e facilitates you in the application to our local tax authority.
