The Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU/e is an ambitious and inclusive department that presently consists of three research units and several research centers, each of which is comprised of independent Principal Investigators (PIs). Our research is broadly centered around the themes of Energy and Flow, Dynamical System Design, and Materials and Mechanics. This vacancy is within the section Energy Technology & Fluid Dynamics of the Energy and Flow theme.
The energy transition is one of the major societal challenges' humanity faces today and to support a society where sustainable energy is available anytime and anywhere, we are in urgent need of new storage materials and conversion technologies. The use of porous media to store energy is very attractive, like underground geothermal energy and salts undergoing phase transition and/or chemical transitions. Extension of our disciplinary knowledge on new diagnostic measurement techniques to visualize the flow dynamics in porous structures (pore- and reactor bed-scale) is needed.
Unique research possibilities
Eindhoven University of Technology, Utrecht Medical Center, and Utrecht University joined forces in the Darcy Center for Porous Media Science and Technology (www.darcycenter.org). The aim of Center is to advance porous media research in the areas of novel porous materials, transport of mass and heat in deformable porous media, and reactive energy storage in porous materials. The Center responds to the strong demand for innovative fundamental and applied research in order to meet today’s societal challenges.
In order to strengthen the unique computational and experimental research within the Darcy Center and the Energy Technology & Fluid Dynamics group, we are looking for an outstanding assistant professor.
Within the lab, high-end experimental equipment is available, like X-Ray diffraction (XRD), CT scanners and MRI scanners. Most MRI scanners are unable to scan materials that contain magnetic contaminants. The equipment at the Darcy Lab, by contrast, is specially equipped for this purpose. The MRI scanners make scans in less than a millisecond. This is vital because magnetic contaminants in the materials (such as iron) greatly accelerate the speed at which the signal decays. At the other extreme, it is possible to conduct experiments lasting several hours, or even a couple of months. Not only water molecules but a wide variety of ionic substances can be localized. Owing to this special combination of research options, the facilities of the Darcy Lab are outstanding in the world
