Are you inspired by the contribution of engineering methods to solve actually relevant clinical and healthcare problems? Are you fascinated by the use of model predictive subject specific decision support in clinical and health care decision-taking?
The Biomedical Imaging & Modeling cluster of the Department of Biomedical Engineering would like to welcome you to run a line of research and education in cardiovascular and respiratory medical engineering.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering
Research at the department of Biomedical Engineering is aimed at training the next generation of biomedical engineers that combine engineering skills with a strong background in the natural and life sciences to address biomedical challenges. We aim for scientific excellence through an engineering approach, where engineering is defined both as an enabler of scientific and societal progress and as a scientific method to acquire scientific knowledge (learning by making). The combination of engineering and life sciences positions us well to make significant contributions to several exciting and promising research areas including model predictive clinical decision support where combinations of mechanistic an data-driven mathematical models are developed and used to forecast the outcome of medical intervention and / or livestyle changes. The scientific questions we address are inspired by fundamental challenges in biomedicine and healthcare and we actively pursue the translation of scientific insights and new therapeutic and diagnostic approaches in partnership with hospitals and other healthcare providers and medical industry, and by promoting biotech entrepreneurship among our staff.
The Cluster Biomedical Imaging & Modeling
The Biomedical Imaging & Modeling cluster is working on medical imaging, image analysis, and modelling and interpretation of biomedical systems via methods and techniques from e.g. mathematics, computer science, physics, and medicine. In both research and clinical diagnostics these methods are applied to understand the workings of the human body, and to accurately predict the application of medical interventions. The Cardiovascular Biomechanics group is part of this cluster and performs research in the field of computational and experimental biomechanical analysis of the cardiovascular system. Aim is to develop computational models, experimental techniques, and medical devices for clinical diagnosis, decision support, and intervention. We are a diverse and committed team and we currently consist of four full-time academic staff members and more than 20 postdocs, PhD and EngD researchers. We maintain close collaboration with national and international clinical, industrial and academic partners and to a great extend are EU-funded.
Collaborations
Powered by the strategic collaboration between the Biomedical Engineering department of TU/e and Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+), among others, the Master's program in Medical Engineering (MSc ME) has been established. This program trains TU/e Biomedical Engineers applying engineering methods to contribute to the solution of actually relevant clinical and health care problems. As our new Assistant Professor you will have an important role in the curricular part of the master Medical Engineering and you will therefore have easy access to the clinic. You will act as a formal TU/e supervisor for students that aim to perform graduation projects at MUMC+.
With respect to research activities you will collaborate closely with the BME group of MUMC+; you will share your expertise in patient-specific mathematical modelling while you will learn from the physiological expertise present in the MUMC+. Main focus will be on cardiovascular and respiratory medical engineering.
