Functieomschrijving

Are you passionate about 2D materials and their promise for future semiconductor devices? All at a place that houses world-class fundamental research and sits in the heart of Europe's premier high-tech region for information technology? You are invited to lead research on 2D materials growth with access to cutting-edge synthesis and metrology tools. You will have many opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and to shape the future of semiconductor devices. Join us as an Assistant Professor in Applied Physics!

We are looking for an Assistant professor in the field of 2D materials. You will address one of the key challenges in this field—synthesis of high-quality 2D materials and their integration in next-generation atomic-scale semiconductor devices.

The position is embedded within the Plasma & Materials Processing (PMP) group, with its pioneering work in the field of atomic-scale processing for electronics, next-generation energy technologies, photonics and quantum technology. You will be connected to the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute (EHCI) and be part of our world-class NanoLab cleanroom community where you will co-direct tools on metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Your research will leverage cutting-edge metrology tools, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), near-field imaging (VIS, IR, THz) and in-situ measurements, to explore and tailor growth mechanisms and to obtain atomic-level understanding of the process and material properties.

Unique for this position is the opportunity to contribute to the strong research momentum on 2D materials at various TU/e departments. Your research on the synthesis of advanced 2D materials will yield a wealth of opportunities to initiate collaborations with our PIs working on for example exploring novel physics in 2D materials, as well as implementing 2D materials in electronic, photonic and quantum devices for new computing, communication and sensing paradigms. Amongst others, this position will be complemented by an assistant professor position at the Electrical Engineering department (IC group) focusing on device fabrication using 2D materials.
You will also become part of the unique ecosystem of the TU/e and the Eindhoven Brainport region with many collaborations with world-leading international companies, high-level institutes, and innovative SMEs.

This position offers a unique platform to develop your independent research program, secure external funding, and mentor a diverse group of students. In addition, you will contribute to the department’s teaching mission at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

To support you, we provide you with a startup package and access to state-of-the-art research facilities such as our clean room. We offer a dedicated mentoring scheme, and free access to a broad portfolio of training programs for personal development and academic leadership. The TU/e also offers a stimulating environment for collaborations with other research units, departments, and industry. Within TU/e, exciting collaborative opportunities exist with other departments and multidisciplinary institutes, and the Dutch funding system is particularly attractive for junior faculty building up a new group, as there are several substantial grants available exclusively for junior people.

Functie-eisen

  • A PhD in (Applied) Physics, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a comparable domain.
  • Experience in the synthesis and characterization of 2D materials.
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research, reflected in demonstratable outputs.
  • Affinity and willingness to teach and contribute to the Applied Physics bachelor and master curriculum and to further develop your teaching skills.
  • Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills, including coaching and mentoring of students and staff, or leading a project.
  • Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

We offer a meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station and city center. In addition, we offer you:

  • A development track with the prospect of becoming Associate Professor and the possibility of an immediate tenured position.
  • A tailor-made start-up package to kickstart your career.
  • Female Assistant Professors starting within our department are entitled to join the Irene Curie Program, which includes a substantial, additional, start-up package.
  • Free access to high-quality training programs for academic leadership, the university teaching qualification program, research and valorization competences, and a dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as the partner career support program to support accompanying partners, an international spouse program and sports facilities.
  • The opportunity to focus your career on research, teaching, or impact. You can develop your personal ambitions within the strategic objectives of the university.
  • A gross monthly salary of min. € 4537,- and max. € 7056,- (scale 11 and scale 12) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, and - depending on your personal situation - a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility).
  • Possibility for part time employment starting at 0.8 fte.
