Functieomschrijving

The electro-optical communications (ECO) group in the faculty of electrical engineering has been leading the scientific and applied research into the use of light for communication systems for the past 40 years, in the Netherlands, Europe and the world. With deep connection with industry and academia around the globe, the ECO group offers new members an opportunity to become the next leaders in optical communications research. The core competence of the ECO staff members is making the link between different technologies and different requirements being raised by the industry. We apply the knowledge gained by collaborators and other scientists in the TU/e and more recently in the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute (EHCI) to develop the required solution for many of the most burning problems in communication. For that sake, the group includes expertise spanning the fundamentals of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) design and manufacturing to the higher layers of communication networks. The group has recently expanded its activities to cover quantum communications and Terahertz systems as well.

The ECO group is housed in the FLUX building on the TU/e Campus overlooking a state-of-the-art cleanroom and supported by more than 300m^2 of labs for conducting experimental work. With 11 tenured scientists and as many as 70 PhD and postDocs the ECO group is a vibrant and exciting research group perfectly suited to embed talented and ambitious scientists. In this video you can get a short glimpse at the kind of research activities carried out in our group through short interviews with past students.

There is a great need for a more personalized approach in healthcare and smart monitoring solutions to revolutionize healthcare and relocate care from the clinical to the home setting. This vacancy is looking to recruit a new TT staff member as part of the recently announced RECENTRE 4TU project. In RECENTRE, we work with patients and citizens to empower people to play a leading role in their lifestyle and health within their own environment. By holistic monitoring of vulnerable populations in their home and tailored recommendations, we relocate care from primary/secondary care and prevent disease development or worsening, resulting in timely intervention, higher quality of life and lower healthcare costs.

By leveraging on existing state-of-the-art sensing techniques, we advance emerging deep-tech sensing approaches, resulting in improvements in scale, cost, and performance. We develop dynamic risk profiles based on multivariate data for the added risk of lifestyle on health outcomes over time. For monitoring high-risk populations in daily life, we create integrated smart sensor systems. The systems are designed for high patient engagement by considering the needs of patients in combination with the vividness of imagining oneself in a virtual environment with different types of sensing techniques in the future-self approach. By deep-phenotyping, we develop dynamic holistic patient profiles over the life course to come towards meaningful personalized adaptive recommendations with high potential for adoption and lifestyle change. We investigate transferability by including multiple application areas; focusing on cancer and obese populations at risk of late effects. This combined risk-based approach using holistic monitoring and engagement enables sustainable empowerment of people in daily-life using eHealth.

Within the RECENTRE consortium the Technical University of Eindhoven is targeting the advancement of sensing technology and will be engaged in the deep-tech exploration of emerging sensing solution using THz and optical waves. The tenure-track scientist will be recruited to integrate the knowhow of the complementary TT researchers in the other universities to define, design and demonstrate the use of emerging sensing technologies to answer the requirements emerging from the joint research. The candidate is expected to have a proven track record in the integration and co-integration of semiconductor technologies and to have a good understanding of sensing challenges. The candidate will be accompanied by a PhD student and two PhD projects co-supervised with researchers from UT and WUR that will offer the needed expertise in the definition of the requirements and deployment strategies of new sensors. It will also be part of the activity to build and mine the emerging data sets from the sensory data.
