2 PhD's on theory and simulation of glass-forming and active soft matter

We invite applications for 2 PhD positions at Eindhoven University of Technology in the field of theoretical soft matter physics. The successful candidates will work on theory and simulation of glass-forming and active soft matter.

One PhD project will focus on the development and application of a new and promising first-principles-based framework to understand the complex dynamics of glass-forming materials. The other PhD project will focus on the role of active (self-propelled) particles in tuning and controlling the glass-forming properties of synthetic and living matter. Both projects involve a combination of (first-principles) theory and molecular dynamics simulations, and provide the possibility to collaborate with experimentalists.

The PhD projects will be carried out in the Non-Equilibrium Soft Matter group, which is part of the Theory of Polymers and Soft Matter division at the Department of Applied Physics, under the supervision of Dr. Liesbeth Janssen.


We are looking for talented and motivated candidates with a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Biophysics, or a related subject. Experience with statistical physics, computer simulation methods, and programming is an advantage. Affinity with theory and simulation, as well as good knowledge of spoken and written English, are essential.


We offer fixed-term, 4-year PhD positions at Eindhoven University of Technology, a dynamic and ambitious university in the heart of the Dutch high-tech industry. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities, including:

  • A gross monthly salary between EUR 2.222,- (first year) and EUR 2.840,- (last year);
  • Additionally, 8% holiday and 8.3% end-of-year annual supplements;
