The Eindhoven University of Technology has vacancies for: 

2 PhD students on innovative reconfigurable drive systems using multiphase inverters and motors for electric cars (ModulED project).

The research will be conducted within the Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, Department of Electrical Engineering, in close cooperation with Chalmers University (Göteborg, Sverige) and Industrial partners in the Netherlands. 

Research challenge

In this project a drive system concept consisting of a multiphase motor and multiphase inverter is studied. Both the motor and GaN-based inverter will be developed by project partners in consultancy with TU/e.

The candidates will study motor reconfiguration using the opportunity of the six phases motor to achieve a dynamic system. Here the aim is to utilize the dynamic reconfigurable character to alter the machine configuration as a function of the vehicle speed to extend the operating range and output power of the electrical machine. The aim will be to improve the absolute angular velocity range with a factor of >3.0. Additionally, the developed motor will be compared to a conventional drive configuration for electrical machines on a TU/e test bench and the improvements investigated.

The task of PhD #1 will be to compare the dynamic drive system to a conventional drive configuration for electrical machines on a TU/e test bench and investigate the improvements using the components. In a second phase a control/commutation algorithm dedicated to a reconfigurable multiphase electrical machine is developed. A "shadow" test bench will be made available at the TU/e to verify the new controller at every step within this project. This is also essential to provide a backup scenario and allows for demonstration of the improved availability of the electric powertrain that includes the ModulED specific characteristic.

PhD #2 will test the power electronics to drive one winding of the motor. In particular, sharing of current over extremely fast paralleled GaN switches will be investigated, and a local controller will be designed and evaluated. An important topic is fault detection, to be developed at the electronic level (leg short circuit, for example). Once detected, a corrective action will be activated to enable the inverter to continue operating in degraded mode (limp-home functionality, using new commutation algorithms for this situation developed by PhD # 1). These new functions will be integrated and the inverter will be tested on the test bench in fault mode.

 

Electromechanics and Power Electronics group

The EPE-group research activities span all facets of electromechanics and power electronics, in particular linear and rotary electrical machines, multi-level power converters, and design tools.  The EPE group has a strong interconnection with industry via direct, national and European funded projects in a variety of application areas like high-tech systems (semicon, robotics, medical) and sustainable energy (mobility, transport, smart grids). EPE owns a modern (opened in 2015) research laboratory (680m2) with additional workshop facilities and an electrical drive educational laboratory. The PhD student will join the group and collaborate intensely with the other members of the EPE group (around 50 researchers), where he/she will participate in a mixed academic / industrial research activity. Research within the EPE Group is characterized by personal supervision. 

The aim of this research project is to investigate new concepts for drive reconfiguration, which at the same time allow dynamical rescheduling to optimize the speed range and power output, and facilitate operation in degraded mode when a partial failure is detected.

Job requirements

For the PhD positions in this project, candidates with and MSc degree in Electrical/Aerospace/Control Engineering and Physics will be selected and hired as doctoral students in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics Group (https://www.tue.nl/epe)for a 4-years period. Both candidates should have: 

  • an excellent knowledge and background in electronic and electromechanical power conversion, 
  • affiliation with industrial / aerospace applications, 
  • a very strong analytical background,
  • strong insight in systems development,
  • experience in using Matlab, Simulink, LT-Spice tools and FEM programs,
  • strong programming and experimental skills,
  • work experience in a multi-partner international project environment,
  • a good command of the English language is required.

Both candidates will closely cooperate with the other parties involved in this project. Your CV must include a complete list of the marks obtained during your whole university career.
