Job description

We are seeking a highly creative and motivated software engineer to help build a next-generation, truly open platform for Al research. It will be interoperable with other platforms
(e g HuggingFace, Open Ml), and will leverage Al to automatically organize datasets, models, papers, and code, and run automated benchmarks to get a clear view of the state of the art. It will be entirely open and extensible to allow people to build their own services, and allow institutions to run their own instances. Above all, we want to make it extremely useful as well as easy to use by Al researchers and developers, building on top of existing platforms and tools that people are already using.

Your role is to help design and implement this platform as part of an open source initiative supported by a European research project. You will join the team that co-created OpenML (, as well as several AutoML tools (e.g. GAMA and the AutoML benchmark), and be part of the very active open-source community around it. The project also includes researchers and developers from 17 other Al instItutes.

You are well-versed in front- and backend platform development (Python and/or Javascript), as well as open-source development (G1tHub, continuous integration). Ideally, you have solid knowledge of machine learning to develop and/or deploy machine learning tools and services. Knowledge of machine learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn) is an asset, as well as experience with containerization (e.g. Docker) You will also be encouraged to interact with the Al research and developer community at conferences, hackathons and other events.

The position is hosted by the Data Mining Group at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. You will be part of and supported by a very active team of Al engineers as well as PhD students and post-docs, supervised by Joaquin Vanschoren (OpenML, NeurlPS Datasets and Benchmarks track, AutoML, meta-learning).

We are looking for 2 new engineers to work on this project. The positions are for 2 years, with possible extensions afterwards. Alternative lengths between 1-3 years are also possible.

Job requirements

We are looking for a motivated candidate with:

  • A Master of Science degree in Computer Science (or similar)
  • Excellent programming skills (ideally Python). Experience with open source is an asset
  • Strong knowledge of machine learninq and/or web application development
  • Relevant experience to the position and a proven track record of prior work
  • Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English
  • A real passion for Al!

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for two to three years.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 10.
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
