Post-Master PDEng position on optimum node placement and hands-off heat map measurement

in the Electro-Optical Communications Group, department of Electrical Engineering.

The ICT post-master designers program is a two-year salaried program in the field of technological design in Electrical Engineering. The program leads to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree.

PDEng project
This project aims at a WiFi AP location recommender system. The end product will be technology to effortlessly map dual-band network performance / channel usage in a home environment by just walking around at a normal pace (e.g. with a smartphone or dedicated device) without any technical input from the user. A set of maps of the surveyed space will be generated according to the performance metric used i.e. highest speed, best overall coverage, most reliable connection etc. The maps should clearly indicate the preferred location of the WiFi AP(s) based on the current heatmap and knowledge gained from other previously created heatmaps (typically of other locations). The project will be carried out at the premises of Genexis B.V.

Department of Electrical Engineering
The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the nine departments of the Eindhoven University of Technology and provides BSc and MSc programs in Electrical Engineering. The department has nine research groups and has research collaborations with other departments at the Eindhoven University of Technology as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both within the Netherlands and internationally. The department has approximately 350 employees and 900 students.

Electro-Optical Communications Group
The “smart communication networks” group is part of the Electro-Optical Communications Group, Electrical Engineering and focusses on the application of computational intelligence to networked systems, with emphasis on the Internet of Things and Opportunistic Communications. The group is well known for its work on learning-based wireless and sensor networks. It investigates how networks can make sense of complex factors (usage patterns, traffic shapes, interference, etc.) and self-regulate. The research focuses on three main strands: swarm intelligence (i.e., how pursue global properties through simple local mechanisms); autonomic computing (i.e., how to obtain a coordinated response in face of extreme perturbations) and cognition (i.e., how to adapt to unpredicted conditions, rewire, self-regulate and evolve). The group specializes in the use of machine learning in the context of massive-scale, high-density networks, particularly in complex IoT and Smart-City scenarios. It has prototyped smart sensors having learning capability within just 10kbytes of RAM, with applications to different network functions including anomaly detection, self-configuration, resource management, media access control, and distributed routing.

Job requirements

Candidates for the PDEng positions should have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or a related topic, with excellent grades, an interest in combining theory and experiment and well-developed analytic skills. A background in wireless communication is recommended.

Conditions of employment

We offer a fulltime temporary appointment for the period of 2 years. Participants will receive a gross monthly salary of € 1.828,-. Moreover 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) and end year allowance is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.
