Job description

Are you eager to work on electrochemical generation of hydrogen with renewable electricity to achieve truly decarbonized economies? Are you passionate about experiments and data analysis? We are looking for an outstanding candidate who has knowledge and/or experience on electrolysis and non-invasive measurement techniques.

Electrochemical generation of hydrogen with renewable electricity is a key technology to achieve truly decarbonized economies. Despite widespread implementation, the classical alkaline water electrolyser is operated at low current densities, due to high internal ohmic resistance (resistance to flow of electric current), resulting in high energy consumption.  A way to reduce the ohmic resistance is to position the electrodes directly adjacent to the diaphragm in a so-called “zero-gap” configuration. However, the ohmic resistance in zero-gap configurations was consistently found to be much higher than expected, awaiting a generally accepted explanation.

The Power and Flow (PF) Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is looking for a new highly motivated group member to conduct fundamental research on 3D gas distribution in a self-manufactured lab-scale zero-gap electrolyser using high-resolution tomography. The obtained knowledge will answer current open questions “what the actual gas evolution/distribution in zero-gap configurations is” and “how it affects the internal ohmic resistance”, which ultimately contributes to the development of future energy-efficient alkaline electrolysis. In this project, you will design and build a lab-scale zero-gap electrolyser with adjustable gap size of micrometer accuracy, and measure and analyze gas distribution within the electrolyser using computed micro-tomography and image processing techniques. You will work in a dynamic and ambitious academic environment and cooperate with not only PF members but also tomography experts at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in Germany as well as experts directly from Nobian. You will also have many opportunities to present your research at leading electrochemical conferences and journals.

Job requirements

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher who meet the following requirements:

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines;
  • Practical experience and solid background on electrolysis and non-invasive measurement techniques;
  • Excellent programming skills in Matlab and preferably hands-on experience on image processing;
  • Excellent communication (academic writing, speaking and presentation) skills in English;
  • Be a team player and willing to work at both the TU/e and HZDR.
