Job description

The Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for:

PhD student on innovative battery management and propulsion systems, targeting ultra-light autonomous vehicles for agricultural application.

The research will be conducted within the Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, Department of Electrical Engineering, in close cooperation with Wageningen University and Industrial partners in the Netherlands.

Research challenge

In this project a new concept for mechanization of agricultural tasks is developed. In order to protect the soil quality, the state-of-the-art heavy mechanization is to be replaced by ultra-light (semi-)autonomous vehicles. Thereby the usual compacting of soil is avoided, and higher crop yields come within reach. The autonomous vehicles serve to perform one or more tasks such as planting/sowing, weeding, transport of crops, and tillage.

To facilitate this development, new concepts for flexible battery management and electrical drives need to be developed at vehicle level and also integrated in a smart grid at farm level. In this way, a contribution to the energy transition in an agricultural environment is made: the new autonomous vehicles can help to obtain near carbon-free operation over the whole agricultural product life cycle. In the project, various battery types will be evaluated; a possible outcome is a hybrid battery management system (BMS) which uses the strong properties of various battery types such as Lead Acid, Nickel Metal Hydride and Li-Ion. By integrating this BMS with the drive system a compact, reliable and efficient flow of energy is to be realized.

Electromechanics and Power Electronics group

The EPE-group research activities span all facets of electromechanics and power electronics, in particular linear and rotary electrical machines, multi-level power converters, and design tools.  The EPE group has a strong interconnection with industry via direct, national and European funded projects in a variety of application areas like high-tech systems (semicon, robotics, medical) and sustainable energy (mobility, transport, smart grids). EPE owns a modern (opened in 2015) research laboratory (680m2) with additional workshop facilities and an electrical drive educational laboratory. The PhD student will join the group and collaborate intensely with the other members of the EPE group (around 50 researchers), where he/she will participate in a mixed academic / industrial research activity. Research within the EPE Group is characterized by personal supervision.

The aim of this PhD research project is to investigate new BMS concepts which allow tight integration in efficient drive systems. Key targets are high power density (i.e. low weight) and high efficiency.

Job requirements

For the PhD position in this project, candidates with and MSc degree in Electrical/Aerospace/Control Engineering and Physics will beselected and hired as doctoral students in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics Group (https://www.tue.nl/epe)for a 4-years period. The candidate should have:
