The Model Driven Software Engineering section at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is searching for a candidate for a fully-funded PhD position on product line engineering in the multidisciplinary context of cyber-physical systems to collaborate with high-tech company ASML in the context of the EU ECSEL project Arrowhead Tools.
The project Arrowhead Tools addresses engineering methodologies and suitable integrated tool chains, in order to create digitalisation and automation solutions, with the global aim of substantial reduction of the engineering costs. Thus the Arrowhead Tools vision is to engineer processes and tool chains for efficient and cost-effective digital engineering of high-tech equipment. For the further and wider commercialisation of automation and digitalization services and products, Arrowhead Tool’s grand challenge includes efficient engineering of tool chains for digitalisation and automation engineering and management, adapted to existing, and new (IoT and SoS) automation and digitalisation engineering methodologies and tools.
In the project, TU/e and ASML collaborate on fundamental challenges in a use case on interoperability between (modelling) tools for cost effective lithography process integration. The targeted innovation in this use case is the seamless interoperability between modelling and analysis tools to facilitate multi-disciplinary engineering teams to efficiently develop, verify, evolve, and deploy calibration, performance and diagnostics test scenarios for lithography machines. In this setting, the successful applicant will perform research on the use of Product Line Engineering (PLE). Most of the state of the art work in PLE assumes greenfield engineering, which does not match the typical high-tech industry, where efficient multi-disciplinary engineering of product families in a setting with legacy artefacts is needed. Novel techniques are needed to support (semi-)automatic extraction of variability information from existing artefacts and management of variability generically, across disciplines, and across development phases. You will investigate such techniques and how to apply them to effectively and efficiently extract variability information from multi-disciplinary behaviour specifications, embedded systems design models, and implementation artefacts. Furthermore, the gap between design and implementation phases needs to be bridged on a product family level. To this end, you will investigate how to couple the variability models and assets obtained from the different levels; and how to ensure or guard consistency between artefacts from the various levels.
The research will be conducted in the Model Driven Software Engineering section of the Computer Science department at TU/e. This section consists of two research groups, Formal System Analysis (FSA) and Software Engineering and Technology (SET). The SET group studies techniques to improve the efficiency of software development by means of applying state-of-the-art model driven software engineering. The group has close collaboration with several leading high-tech companies and organizations in the Eindhoven region. The candidate will be working in the SET group, with ample opportunities to collaborate with staff, other PhD students, and to co-supervise MSc students relevant to the candidates’ research. The candidates are expected to be in close collaboration with and willing to spend substantial part of their time at the industrial partner ASML.
