Range anxiety and packaging are the major barriers in the large-scale electrification of various mobility segments ranging from passenger vehicle to commercial vehicles. There is not one electrical drive technology which can answer the need of different solutions. Every application needs its own specific design solution, which need to be evaluated in the so called feasibility studies. The target of such studies include optimization calculations for total cost of ownership, efficiency, packaging, etc. By introducing modular (scalable) motor solutions, component pre-development (thus system) costs can be reduced. Furthermore, scalable solutions are ideal for combined efficiency packaging optimization (of the vehicle), which either increases the range or the efficiency. Grey-box models provide a good balance between high-accuracy and time-optimized calculation methods, which make them ideal for scalable electrical machine solutions.
Your tasks will comprise development of grey-box models of different electrical machine technologies, ranging from high-efficient, magnet-biased towards cost-effective reluctance machines. The models will provide a bridge between high-fidelity model-based approaches and data-driven models typically used in the application software of the electrical drives. The multi-physical model approach will cover 4 scaling modules for the electrical, magnetic, mechanical and thermal energy domains. Depending on the system optimization parameters, these modules will be treated at different detail levels to make a good balance between model accuracy and simulation time. Your findings will contribute to the transition from model-based to data-driven approaches which integrate big data for electrical drive designs. Additionally, your findings will contribute to the active projects within the EPE group and TUe research institutes (CPSe & EAISI-Responsible Mobility). Besides research you will also contribute to education within the department. Apart from supervising BSc and MSc students in their research projects, other assistance in education, e.g. in bachelor courses, is usually limited to around 5% of your contract time.
