Job Description:

Vehicle energy management aims at improving the energy efficiency of vehicles by controlling the power flows within the vehicle’s powertrain and auxiliaries (HVAC, etc). For traditional vehicles, a better energy efficiency leads to lower fuel cost and lower emissions, while for electric vehicles, it leads to an extension of the vehicle’s driving range. Vehicle energy management problems are solved by solving optimal (model predictive) control problems. This PhD position aims at advancing the optimal control algorithms for vehicle energy management by focusing on scalability and computational efficiency. The algorithms will be implemented on a demonstrator vehicle of hybrid long-haul coach.

The PhD position is funded by and part of the EU H2020 project LONGRUN (Development of efficient and environmental friendly LONG distance powertrain for heavy dUty trucks aNd coaches). The LONGRUN project focusses on developing different engines, drivelines and demonstrator vehicles with 10% energy saving, 30% lower exhaust emissions and involves several OEMs of trucks and coaches (DAF, VDL, etc) and research institutes (VUB, IFPEN, etc). The project also includes concepts for connected and digitalised fleet management, predictive maintenance and operation in relation to electrification where appropriate to maximise the emissions reduction potential.

Tasks:

  • Study the literature on vehicle energy management and (convex) optimization methods.
  • Development of (control-oriented) interpretable models for the vehicle under consideration.
  • Stochastic analysis of consistency and convergence of the results and empirical validation of the techniques on complex physical/chemical and/or electrical/mechatronic systems.
  • Implement the developed techniques on a prototype coach using dSPACE.
  • Dissemination of the results of your research in international and peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Writing a successful dissertation based on the developed research and defending it.
  • Assist in educational tasks, such as the supervision of Master students and assisting with courses.

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • You are a talented and enthusiastic young researcher.
  • You have a strong background Systems and Control, particularly model predictive control and optimization theory, as well as affinity with automotive systems .
  • You finished a MSc in Systems and Control, (Applied) Physics, (Applied) Mathematics, Information Technologies, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • You have good programming skills and experience with Matlab.
  • You have good communicative skills, and the attitude to partake successfully in the work of a research team with strong interaction with industrial partners.
  • You are creative and ambitious, hard-working and persistent.
  • You have good command of the English language (knowledge of Dutch is not required).

Conditions of employment

We offer a challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious university through a fixed-term appointment for the period of 4 years. As an employee of the university, you will receive a gross salary according to the collective labour agreements of the Dutch universities increasing from € 2,325 per month initially, to € 2,972 in the fourth year. The university offers an attractive package of fringe benefits such as excellent technical infrastructure, child care, holiday savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities.
