Job description

Indium phosphide (InP) based photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are playing a critical role in current telecommunication applications, as well as in other emerging fields, such as optical interconnects, medical imaging and sensing. A new integration platform is developed, where active and passive photonic components are directly realized on a InP-membrane.

In the Photonic Integration group at TU Eindhoven active research is done on exploring this photonic membrane platform, which promises a revolution in performance. It gives an enhanced optical confinement in the waveguide (implying a high integration density), miniaturized device spot size (leading to fast operation speed and low energy consumption) and possibility to integrate with CMOS electronics (giving reduced packaging cost).

This research project looks at the next steps in the development of the InP membrane platform. The successful applicant will explore the unique possibilities of this platform, using the strong interaction of the guided modes with materials. The researcher will first focus extending the capabilities of the platform by optimizing the most important passive components of the platform and adding a novel component to it: a polarization converter, which is a key component in many applications. As a next step the researcher will investigate the integration of a novel  wide-band electro-absorption modulator, that has been invented in the group. The researcher will investigate the challenges in material epitaxy and process technologie and will investigate the compatibility of the novel components to the full membrane platform. This project is part of the research activities of the InP membrane team. The technology development and device realization will take place in the world-class cleanroom facilities at Nanolab@TU/e (www.tue.nl/nanolab). The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Jos van der Tol and Dr. Yuqing Jiao.

Job requirements

  • Masters degree in Applied Physics, Optical Science or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with clean room microfabrication technology
  • Affinity for photonic devices and circuits
  • Ability to work with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds
  • Fluent spoken and written English

Conditions of employment

We offer a challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious university through a fixed-term appointment for a period of 4 years. The research during this period must be concluded with the attainment of a PhD degree. A salary is offered starting at Euro 2222 per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to Euro 2840 per month (gross) in the last year.
