Job description

As Head of Education & Student Affairs (ESA), you’ll be responsible for providing educational support at TU/e, and in particular in the Department of Industrial Design. You will be part of the Educational Board of the Department of Industrial Design (ID) and you’ll play an important role at university-wide level. Together with the Director of Education & Student Affairs (ESA) and your fellow Heads of Education & Student Affairs in the other departments, you’ll make up a formal group that is responsible for improving the educational support processes at TU/e. 

As Head of Education & Student Affairs (ESA), you’ll also be responsible for organizing and coordinating a range of processes and projects. You’ll coordinate educational innovation projects and cross-disciplinary improvement projects with lecturers. Your tasks will include managing the educational processes aimed at improving the educational programs. Furthermore, as Head of ESA you’ll be responsible for staff leading of student counselors and support, quality assurance, educational and examination organization within the departmental ESA team and for functional staff leading of the student administration (which will fall under the Education & Student Affairs (ESA) service). You’ll also represent the Educational Board in projects for educational development such as ICT projects, as well as project education which is carried out in the ID department by ‘Squads’. You’ll also communicate with students and student-representation bodies, and you’ll work together with lecturers, for example on activating education. You’ll hold responsibility for the department’s recruitment and information-providing processes. Building and maintaining both internal and external contacts, including those with HBO (Higher Vocational Education), will form an important part of your tasks.

Tasks and responsibilities:

As Head of Education & Student Affairs (ESA), you will be the first point of contact for educational support in the Industrial Design department.

  • You’ll be responsible for the organizational aspects of all educational programs in the Graduate Program(s), in consultation with the Graduate Program Director;
  • You’ll lead staff of the student counselors and support, quality assurance, educational and examination organization within the departmental ESA team, and for functional staff leading of the student administration (which will fall under the Education & Student Affairs (ESA) service).
  • You’ll be part of the Educational Board of the Department of Industrial Design (ID);
  • You’ll be responsible for the composition and quality of the BSc education: 
    • for the ID BSc education, working together with and under the responsibility of the BSc Program Director;
    • for the ID MSc education, working together with and under the responsibility of the Program Director of the graduate program;
    • for the organizational aspects of the BSc education, such as timetables, educational programming, quality  assurance and content of the education, in consultation with the subdepartment chairs and the educational coordinators of the groups.
  • You’ll initiate off-the-shelf projects for students who are changing their study direction;
  • You’ll act as sparring partner for the Program Directors (Bachelor School [BSc] & Graduate School) within the Department of Industrial Design (ID); 
  • You’ll handle the coordination of the intro and the program for new Master’s and Pre‑Master’s students;
  • You’ll handle the coordination and legal aspects of Communication and contacts relating to the educational programs with industry;
  • You’ll make contacts with the educational developments and projects initiated by the Education & Student Affairs (ESA) service (including: professional skills, CANVAS, training courses).

To deal at the right level with the interactions and potential conflicts between the requirements of the departments, between the departments themselves and university-wide requirements. In this respect, as Head of Education & Student Affairs (ESA) you’ll not only be active in the Industrial Design department where you’ll report to / receive hierarchical guidelines from the Departmental Board, and you’ll also have intensive contacts with the Education & Student Affairs (ESA) service and the Director of Education & Student Affairs (ESA). To formalize your role as Head of Education & Student Affairs (ESA), 0.1 fte of your appointment will fall under the Education & Student Affairs (ESA) service, where you’ll report to / receive hierarchical guidelines from the Director of Education & Student Affairs (ESA).

Job requirements

You have a demonstrably strong affinity with Industrial Design education and educational innovation projects. You preferably have a PhD and at least 5 years of relevant working experience. As well as that, you possess good communication skills, a strong focus on your working environment, a result-oriented approach and a clear ability to lead and motivate those around you.

You are customer focused, you have good team working skills, and you have the ability to work independently. You have a helicopter view, you can keep a clear overview and you know how to set and follow-up on priorities. Negotiating skills, effectiveness, organizational awareness and a focus on finding the right solutions are also important aspects of the complex field in which you’ll operate.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary appointment for a period of one year with the prospect of a permanent contract of employment. The salary will depend on your education, knowledge and experience, and will be a minimum of € 4.815.- and a maximum of € 5.861.- gross per month on a fulltime basis (scale 13 CAO [collective labor agreement] for the Dutch Universities). Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) offers attractive secondary conditions of employment such as training and personal development facilities, on-campus day care for children and excellent sports facilities. The conditions of employment selection model offers you flexibility, for example in relation to working hours and leave.
