We are looking for a data engineer who is motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team of technical and non-technical experts, all of whom are shaping the design and deployment of learning analytics solutions at the university from the ground up. You will be pioneering in an energetic, result-oriented team that is focused on providing high-quality, sustainable learning analytics data input for educational experimentation. Your efforts will visibly and impactfully contribute to research improving educational quality, thereby enabling students to become better engineers who will tackle the societal challenges of tomorrow.

Your challenge: as our data engineer, you will develop how we flow data, ensuring quality and secure data handling as well as compliance with privacy guidelines and good data governance. You have a diverse task package and will be called upon to actively design and execute innovative solutions to enhance education using learning analytics. These solutions must fit the university’s strategic vision as well as its infrastructure and policies. As such, we are looking for a proactive individual, a good communicator who is up for a challenge, and a professional that can pragmatically think in terms of solutions.

Your tasks will consist of:

  • Data engineering for the deployment of learning analytics for the educational domain.
  • Proactively working on sustainable improvements to infrastructure in line with strategic vision and existing architecture.
  • Building and safeguarding data pipelines, ingesting and transforming a variety of data sources, and securely transporting data to the customer.
  • Consulting and advising on the technical side of several experimental projects that use learning analytics data and deploying the (customized) solutions to enable these state-of-the art experiments.
  • Tracking and reporting on data movements and costs to help the team optimally deploy (cloud) infrastructure.
  • Co-developing and co-maintaining our learning analytics IT infrastructure in line with other related teams.

Job requirements

What you need:

  • Basic to mid-level knowledge of Azure Cloud Infrastructure and Azure Data Factory.
  • Basic knowledge of working with API's and ability to connect to source systems using API's.
  • Mid-level to expert knowledge of SQL, Python and Unix.
  • Experience in modelling and developing data warehouses and data-marts is a plus
  • Experience with the Agile way of working is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluent in English at minimum, Dutch is a plus.
  • Eager to learn new things and a can-do mindset. Willingness to perform operational tasks and develop other skill sets outside of strict job descriptions.
