Job description

Do you have a special interest in user-centered design, interaction, and/or immersive experiences of data visualization and visual analytics? Are you fascinated by foundations and applications of visualization? We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher for the Visualization Cluster. This vacancy is part of the Irène Curie Fellowship and is currently only open to female candidates.

Job Description

We are looking for a motivated researcher who has a deep interest in the study of how to optimally join the forces of humans and machines through visual representations and interaction, with a special focus on user-centered design, interaction, immersive visual analytics, and related topics.

This position  seeks to expand the Visualization Cluster’s expertise, specifically in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. The focus will be on developing methodologies to define interaction and visualization means and strategies that best support users.

In this role you would complement the expertise in the Visualization Cluster, which focuses on developing new methods and techniques for exploring and analyzing large data sets. The focus is on data visualization and visual analytics. Additionally, you are transferring knowledge and experience to new generations of students through teaching, and guiding them in doing research and solving real-world problems.

The Visualization Cluster

We study how to provide insight in large, heterogeneous data sets, such as combinations of multivariate data, high dimensional data, complex imaging data, network data, event data, and geospatial data, all often time varying. We investigate how to incorporate methods from statistics and AI to support human analysis, understanding, and decision-making. Visual analytics for AI can provide more effective and efficient model development, as well as more trust and confidence in AI-based decisions.

We develop novel approaches that go from fundamental research to application-oriented visual designs. We cooperate with specialists from various application domains, including health care, machine learning, bioinformatics, forensics, and fraud detection, both from academia and industry (e.g., Philips, ASML).

The Visualization Cluster has a strong track record in data visualization and visual analytics. It has generated award-winning contributions at major visualization conferences (IEEE VIS, IEEE InfoVis, IEEE VAST, EuroVis); start-up companies (MagnaView/ProcessGold, SynerScope, and AnalyzeData); and a number of techniques that are used on a large-scale worldwide. And it participates actively in the Eindhoven AI System Institute (EAISI) and Data Science initiatives at TU/e.

Key objectives of the position are:

  • Perform research in user-centered design, interaction and/or immersive visual analytics.
  • Acquire research funding from (inter-)national funding bodies or industry.
  • Develop and teach courses with different teaching styles  like lecturing, or challenge based-learning.
  • Supervise student projects at Bachelor, Master, PDEng, and PhD levels in Eindhoven.

Job requirements

  • Motivated researcher with a PhD in user centered visualization/ visual analytics research or a comparable domain.
  • Ability to conduct high-quality academic research reflected in demonstratable outputs.
  • Motivated to teach, contribute to teaching processes, and develop excellent teaching skills.
  • Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills, including coaching and mentoring of students and staff, leading a project or chairing a group.
  • Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English.

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • An 18-month contract as Assistant Professor which can become permanent after 12 months on the same employment level upon successful evaluation. Experienced candidates might be offered a permanent contract already at the start of employment.
  • The opportunity to focus your career on education, research or impact. You can develop your personal ambitions and objections within the strategic objectives of the university.
  • As an Irène Curie Fellow, you are entitled to a substantial start-up package to kick-off your career.
  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 11 (min. €4537, max. €6209 gross per month).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • A dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • High-quality training programs for academic leadership and teaching.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as are a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) and partner career support.
