At Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), our Coding Theory and Cryptology (CC) group of the Discrete Mathematics (DM) cluster of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (M&CS) are looking for an (tenure-track) assistant professor in Cryptology.

Job description

The position will be part of the Coding Theory and Cryptology (CC) group, within the Discrete Mathematics (DM) cluster. The other group in DM is Discrete Algebra and Geometry.
The CC group consists of one full professor (Lange), two associate professors (Schoenmakers and de Weger), and three assistant professors (Ashur, Hülsing and Ravagnani). CC provides undergraduate and graduate courses in cryptology, coding theory, algebra and number theory,
as well as service teaching.

CC and the Security (SEC) group of Etalle form the Eindhoven Institute for the Protection of Systems and Information (Ei/ Ψ) which covers the whole technical spectrum of information security. Ei/ Ψ organizes the master's track Information Security Technology within the Computer Science program at TU/e.

The ideal candidate has research experience complementing the existing strengths in CC and SEC but candidates from all areas of cryptology including neighboring fields such as software security, side-channel attacks, reverse engineering, etc. are encouraged to apply.

The assistant professor is expected to

• perform outstanding research in the area of cryptology and security;
• establish research collaborations within the department and internationally;
• take responsibility in coordinating and updating courses;
• advise BSc, MSc, and PhD students;
• initiate, acquire and coordinate research projects;
• perform managerial and/or administrative tasks for the cluster or department.

Research Area

The Coding Theory and Cryptology group is internationally visible in design and analysis of cryptographic primitives for public-key and symmetric-key cryptography as well as in applied multi-party computation. A particular strength is post-quantum cryptography where group members are involved in 4 of the 15 round-3 candidates in the NIST competition. The group has also made headlines analyzing deployed systems and finding (cryptographic) weaknesses. On the constructive side, the group has developed algorithms that are now standardized by IETF, ISO, and NIST and find broad deployment. The candidate is expected to contribute to the research themes within the CC group and Ei/ Ψ and to do outreach to other departments and beyond.

Job requirements

• PhD degree in mathematics or computer science with a strong publication record and outstanding research achievements and other tokens of international recognition such as invited presentations and membership in program committees or editorial boards.
• Experience in acquiring external research funding from (inter-)national funding bodies or industry is an asset.
• Ability to teach, shown by experience or, assistance in teaching at academic level in the areas mentioned above as well as positive evaluations of these teaching efforts.
• Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills demonstrating the potential to supervise PhD projects as well as bachelor and master theses.
• Strong cooperation skills and the ability to work in a team.
• Excellent proficiency (written and verbal) in English. Note that there is no Dutch language requirement.

• A Tenure Track of five years with the prospect of becoming Associate Professor.
  After a maximum of four years the tenure decision will be made. If you have a more senior profile, a tailor-made career proposal will be considered.
