Job description

Are you a passionate researcher in the field of semiconductor integration looking for a new challenge?  We have an open position for someone to complement our existing efforts in heterogeneous device and integrated circuit technologies. Areas of interest include, though not exclusively, new fabrication technologies, related to hybrid and heterogeneous integration, and integrated semiconductor devices using III-V materials such as InP, GaN, GaAs and/or Si. You are encouraged to seek for synergy with the Nanolab infrastructure, which is a globally leading cleanroom for III/V processing, and includes, amongst other infrastructure, a unique 4” Pilot Line and a 193-nm ASML scanner for optical lithography, for highly robust and reproducible epitaxial growth and processing. Areas of interest also include the link with applications, such as sensing and metrology, quantum technologies, communications, and computing.

The candidate is expected to set up an independent research profile in such an area, supervise PhD students and postdocs, and contribute to the education at BSc and MSc level.

Field

High performance electronic and photonic technologies are anticipated to converge in the coming years.  Integration is the technology to combine various optical, photonic and electronic components. The integration of advanced electronics with photonics will be crucial to meet the energy efficiencies and performance of miniaturised sensors, imaging systems and communications devices. The field has primarily been driven by communications, but over the last decade, applications in sensing, metrology, lidar, and (quantum, neuromorphic, optical) computing have strongly emerged, also in industry. The main technology trends are towards higher electrical (modulation) bandwidths, lower-energy-loss and more robust circuits, further miniaturization and integration density, and closer multi-technology integration.

About us

The Photonic Integration group at TU/e has a long track record of setting pioneering results in indium phosphide (InP) based photonic integration.  Our group consists of approximately 55 members, including 8 permanent faculty members. We are a key player in the field, as evidenced by our founding and coordinating role in the globally leading Joint European Platform for photonic integrated components and circuits JePPIX.  We take a leading role in driving InP-based photonic integration towards the next level. A key enabler for our work is our Nanolab cleanroom facility, which specializes in III-V processing.

Department

Our group is part of the Electrical Engineering (tue.nl), which is one of the nine departments at TU/e. It employs 892 staff members and has 1.130 BSc/MSc students, making it the largest electrical engineering education in the Netherlands. The working language, including education, is English.

Institute

The Photonic Integration group is part of the recently established Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute, focusing on exponential technologies, most notably photonics, electronics and quantum technology, for a sustainable information society. The EHCI brings together researchers from various Departments, to stimulate collaboration and synergistic research, and to create joint roadmaps for strategic investments. It is one of the only four TU/e institutes, showing the clear commitment of our university to photonics as a main strategy for excellent research and valorisation.

Brainport region

TU/e is located at the heart of the Eindhoven Brainport region, a deep-tech ecosystem, which includes multinationals like ASML, Philips, NXP, and Signify, institutes like imec and Holst Center, and scale-ups like SMART Photonics, EFFECT Photonics and PhotonFirst. This makes Eindhoven a unique place for innovation, with lots of options for technology transfer and industrial collaboration. The Dutch government has identified photonics as a key enabling technology, which is reflected in the large number of opportunities.

Job requirements

  • A PhD degree in a relevant topic with high quality research output in the leading scientific journals and conferences.
  • A track record working with state-of-the-art technologies in electronics and/or optoelectronics and the clear ambition to develop oneself in a direction of synergy between electronics and optoelectronics.
  • A clear and ambitious research vision and teaching vision.
  • Applications from candidates with a track-record and vision for electronic device research (e.g. transistors) will be particularly welcome.
  • Effective communication and organization skills.
  • Strong cooperation skills and the ability to work in teams.
  • A clear ambition and ability to teach and or assist in the teaching process.
  • Experience in acquiring external research funding from (inter-)national funding bodies or industry is an asset.
  • Excellent proficiency (written and verbal) in English.

Conditions of employment

  • A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network.
  • Free access to high-quality training programs for academic leadership, the university teaching qualification program, research and valorisation competences, and a dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • For women candidates, a substantial startup package in line with the Irène Curie Fellowship will be granted.
  • A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, and savings schemes.
  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as the Dual Career Opportunity program to support accompanying partners, an international spouse program, and excellent on-campus children day care and sports facilities.
