Research in the Applied Physics department is clustered in three focal areas: Functional Materials, Transport Physics, and Plasma Physics and Radiation Technology. The department participates in national research schools and in two top technology institutes: the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) and the Materials Innovation Institute (M2i). The Applied Physics department has 15 full-time professors and some 375 staff, of whom about 50 are members of the fixed scientific staff and 140 are doctoral candidates. The department has around 400 students.
